|
|
As you recently know my dads pc has been randomly turning off...
Things i've done
Reformatted
Changed powersupply
Cleaned CPU fan and etc with Co2 Canister
I went to BIOS to look at the PC HEALTH.. It said the fan speed was 2635RPM and the temperature was 81 degrees..
Is underclocking a good idea? It seems its overheating, i changed power supply but still same problem, cleaned with co2 canister.. again problem..
Its a pentuim 4, 2.49Ghz 512MB

IF you want to fix this problem than don't use your PC as much, if you run a lot of programs you should also think about getting a RAM stick

That is your best bet.

true, did you virus scan it? and again think about a RAM stick (it increases your RAM, ex: you can go from 1GB to 2GB)

Why are you guys talking about viruses and adding RAM when he has an overheating problem?
Pull the heatsink and clean it, apply a new tube of thermal grease. Put on a bigger heatsink if necessary.
81 degrees is definitely too hot, I'd recommend a new heatsink.

They are talking about viruses because if the computer is over-heating it could be because the computer is working much harder than it should be, and running slower than it should be, thus making us think that there is a possibility of a virus causing his computer to overwork and overheat.
I would second the RAM stick though, 512MB is a little small, even for business uses, try to at least upgrade to a 1GB.

Sounds like your heatsink somehow managed to stop making good contact or the fan is clogged.
Take it off, clean whatever thermal gunk there is, reapply new stuff, it's like 5 bucks.
And don't overdo it. More != better, just put a little dot in the middle of the cpu an let the heatsink do the spreading work.

Replace heatsink-fan on CPU.

Is it 85 Fahrenheit or Celcius? Not likely Fahrenheit but you're on a stock cpu When I first built my computer the heatsink wasn't on the cpu correctly and the temperatures were crazy, once I remounted it, it was good.

Even if it's at 100% load 85c is way too hot.
Like others have said, new thermal grease, add a case fan if necessary, if it's still too hot then a new heatsink+fan will be needed.

Hmm i really hope its not 81c... because your computer would start melting. I have never heard of a computer getting that hot... ever! Twice as hot as it should be on full load.
Check if its C or F... Because your computer should be melting.
