Reformatting will erase everything on the formatted drive. If you have C and D, and you format C, D will stay the same. If there's an OS on C, it will be removed. You can create a boot disk (with a floppy or CD) that can format the computer, but will not be able to re-install your current OS. If you have no installation disks, you may want to try Linux, a free OS.

think of it this way;
You've got a computer case, but no parts in it.
How do you get it to run? put computer components in it, and push the power button.
if you don't have a cd (or flash drive, change boot sequence) then how can you install an OS on your computer?
Thats just CRAZY Thinking!
