Cheat Engine

yester day a showed ce to one of my friends and learned him how to hack his score in "minigolf mayhem" (its called something like that), he had it in an unregistred version.

The next day i saw him he told me that he had cracked the game with cheat engine!
I asked him how and he told me that i set the score to 9999999999999 then the game closes and his computer restarted he opened the game and suddenly it was registred.

i saw the before and after it was "registred"

is it really possible to crack games with ce or was this just a lucky program error?

It is possible to crack games with cheat engine yes, (e.g disassembling and try to find the code that checks if it is unregistered etc...)
But just setting the score to 9999999999999 shouldn't do that (ce doesn't overwrite memory when a value is too high)

One explenation might be that the game is programmed to make a game registered if you reach a certain score as price.

... will the new version coming out have any new features with the register values, a single line assembler, or anything like that?

mmm he did the same with 2 ohter games and it still worked but it isnt every game it works with!

there'd really only be the possibility that dark byte mentioned that it registers it as a reward and if that's not the case then
your friend is trying to make a fool out of you
maybe he dled a crack von astalavista or got a serial with s2k and now he's telling you he's the master hacker who can crack any prog with one tool
well let me tell you one thing:
-ram editors are hardly used for cracking
-all those that do exist and i know of do require to start the editing tool every time, not only once
-if he only edited the score then he only edited the score, if there wasn't any chain reaction that caused it to get registrered there's no way it could

maybe he just used a resource hacking tool and edited the title of the game with it...lol that would be uber 1337

You can crack apps in different ways...ram editing can be used, you can hex edit stuff and you can disassemble a program.
Also i once "cracked" a program by simply editing the gui by using resource editing. The only protection in the program was that a button was not available, so i made it available Razz

Ram editing can be done with ce...you know the URL i think...
Hex editors? Use any like ultra edit, hackman and so on...hackman also supports ram editing btw.

I guess you could use CE on software that has a countdown - say ..30 days until you "have to buy." If you found the countdown and froze it.

But this making the game registered through score; that doesn't make any sense.

I do not believe this guy is lying - I just think he may not know all the things behind the story.

The very idea of a "registration," is that somewhere you enter information about yourself so that the company can see how many/who is using their software.

By giving out "registrations" through score achieval contradicts all logic. For a player to even get to this certain score level, the producers must assume the player has already bought the game.

Unless it's already a free game that you download - in which case I could buy it - but still it sounds very strange.
