overclocking=shorter PC lifetime
if your PC doesnt last long you need another=spending more

But usually your CPU will still last a few years, which is enough for users (gamers) that do overclock their CPUs.

It will reduce the lifetime, the question is will it matter? CPU's already last practically forever, by the time it dies it will be long obsolete.
If it helps any, I have an old overclocked P1 in the attic that still runs, so I wouldn't worry too much. Keep the voltages within spec and keep it cooled well and you'll be just fine.

overclocking is the best invention since sweatpants and honey mustard sauce.
you can clock your CPU to 1ghz higher than you bought it stock with.
Im gonna show you my cpu-z stats once i build my new one in two weeks

there's no guarantees to how much you can overclock it, if you can't even overclock it 1mhz, then you still got what you payed for either way. just because somebody got an amazing chip, doesn't mean you don't have a chance of getting absolute shit.

wait, what?
So some chips can OC, and some cant?
I thought they were all able too... technically you can clock it to whatever you want but thats not a very good idea.

| how much they OC varies. just because some kid hits 3.0ghz doesn't mean you will, despite having the same cpu. the chip itself is a limiting factor, just because it's the same model doesn't mean they are all going to OC the exact same.

it makes sense, fixes/revisions in the hardware itself, where in the wafer your chip came from, etc.

no, it doesnt make sense.
all E8400's are the same but... not the same at the same time?
They are made exactly the same... but aren't capable of the same things.
One would expect that they WOULD be capable of the same things, since they are, well, the same thing.
