xp 32-bit only recognizes about 3.25, if you get xp 64-bit then go ahead, get anywhere from 1-128gb of ram.
and your budget of 1400 is maxed anyhow.

edit: @SACD, i wasnt even keeping track of the prices, came out perfect!
edit2: btw shipping is included in that price i posted. |
Same with the last guy I made a rig for on here, but mine was even closer. $1,000 budget and it came to $1,000.92 shipped
To the OP, chances are you don't need 8GB, I multitask like crazy and 4GB is plenty.

I'd go with Madman's. Hell, I'm a lazy ass so I'll be favoriting this page and possibly getting that setup as well once I work up enough money.
And, don't post twice. Just because someone didn't reply to it, doesn't mean people need to see it a 2nd time to reply.

That looks pretty solid.
8gb is cool and all, but in reality, I doubt you'll ever use more than 4 at this current state in time.
Also, a 8800gt with 512 of video ram will certainly help in gaming scenarios, just drop an extra $30 for it and ditch 4gb of ram.

so you would go with a 8800GT 512mb over the 256mb?

Obviously yes, 256MB is just too low, 512 is the minimum for current games. One question, are you planning on overclocking?

increase its default clock speed to squeeze abit more performance out of it.
sometimes can be risky, possible to kill a part that way.

Unless you go watercooled or use a radiator i wouldn't overclock. Watercooled doesn't cost too much ,but a radiator god 800 bucks ,but you'll have negative temps on the cpu.
