It isn't progress if you are forced to change operating systems while you have a perfectly functional OS to begin with. The only major changes that were made between XP and Vista are changes that better Microsoft and other companies that wish to secure their digital properties.

Isn't there a possibility to load this method before Vista starts, then make use of it while working in Vista (like a live dual boot).

Not sure what you mean, but if you boot up with the vm you hardly notice it. and can load the driver using this method (that uses the vm)
If you mean load the driver before vista starts, possible. I heard there was a int 13 hook a while back that did that. Not sure if it still works. But not my method

Thats why I only boot up in vista when I want to fuck it up. Everything else I do in xp (dual boot)

I see. I'm still very lost when it comes to Vista but this gives me a beter understanding in general. Wasn't the int 13 hook the method that involved the recovery option in Vista which gave you some sort of clearance?

Agreed. I tried Vista twice, and on both occasions I switched back within a day. I have yet to find a single thing to be a major improvement when looking at Vista. Except for the theme ofcourse...

I will just wait 3 years then and see what you will have to say. But the way things are going you will hate Vista 3 years from now. The things that are being implemented aren't for the faint-hearted.

GUI: Agreed.
Security: Yes ofcourse. But it doesn't just limit potential hackers, it also limits you.
More stable: No, not yet anyway.

gui, perhaps, but I myself don't really like those transparent titlenames or the windows button always covering some pixels of my app

security, perhaps, but I disabled UAC on the first day, and trying my best to disable the other security features as well

stable, perhaps after the patch, but every now and then when doing something ghraphical, the screen goes black for a few seconds, and then every 2 minutes or so I get a hang for 10 seconds followed by a message that the display isn't responding anymore while the display looks fine...

edit: moved from random spam to general programming since this has at least a little to do with programming (drivers)

Hmm, anyway. Do you perhaps have a thread somewhere else on the forums that goes more into detail then it does here? The spam section isn't all that for this matter.

Anyway, I am heading for bed. The only reason I stayed up this late was because I suddenly saw this thread coming about. If you do have another topic on this matter, please pass me the link.

G'night,
Ani

Not really a better thread, or more detail. (in case you never figured out, I suck at explaining details, you'll have to pull them out of me)

Anyhow, dbvm is a virtual machine(and tiny os) I wrote that boots as soon as possible (from floppy disk, cd, and in the future usb thumbdrive) which will run vista(and other os'es as well like linux) in a virtual machine and adds a few new instructions to the cpu that apps can use. E.g Change selectors, hide memory, redirect interrupts to different interrupts or completly skip the idt, disable interrupts including non maskable ones, etc...

This method mainly makes use of the change selector option and interrupt disabling for short times. (after switching from usermode to kernelmode to block taskswitches that'll blue screen you)

When it is already in kernelmode (in a unsafe way) it allocates some nonpaged memory. Reads the driverfile's pe header and builds it up in that memory.
It then creates a systemthread at the driver's driver entry, go back to usermode and that's it. The driver is now running and executing in a decently-safe kernel environment. Except that the driverentry params arn't valid.

also, there is a irc channel on the same server the cef channel is called #dbvm, I can be found there sometimes for semi-realtime chats about this.

im probs gonna get it to, once a service pack comes up and fixes all the shitty bugs it has.
