i live in the UK and i NEVER pay for software, music or films...
never had any problems about it either Confused

i download everything from private trackers and get great speeds.

TS-> you have more chance of winning the lottery than being busted for downloading a few films or software so ignore all the bullshit in this thread

as for your speed problem maybe you are behind a router, if that is the case be sure to forward a port otherwise you probably wont get more than 10KB/s Laughing

nearly everyone i know uses p2p and torrents daily and none of them have been caught Rolling Eyes

in the UK pirate games/CDs/DVDs/blu-rays are on every street corner for less than £5 a time

if you're a pussy dont use them... but trust me, there are so many people using warez etc. that its EXTREMELY unlikely you will be caught/prosecuted

a router does act as a firewall, it blocks all ports by default.
type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser and you can configure things such as port forwarding
