Sure we can, your first language shapes your mind, teaches you how to think. Often when people move on to different languages they program as if they were programming in their first, it's that powerful.

He means it is a mistake to learn VB as a first language. He is probably right.

Learn C. C++ is a superset of C (meaning C++ contains everything in C) and most people who "are learning C++" never progress to actually using the C++ specific features.
You need to know all of C to program C++, you don't need any of C++ to program C, and C++ is an incredibly complicated language.

I started with GVBASIC, something like pascal on a hardware linux emulator, which is actually intended for use as a langauge translator
