The main trick to carving effectively on a pumpkin is to use the skin as a shading material. What I mean is, if you know anything about drawing, you can basically have three shades: the skin is a dark shade, the skin shaved off is a medium shade, and the pumpkin piece removed is light (if a candle is inside).

yes all you need is a sharp thin blade to do a one like firefox...the crazy one are the faces that are carved into the skind/rind without cutting past the bottom layer
