What could I feed a cat? A stray just walked outside in my backyard and I let it in my house, I think it's really hungry but I don't know what I can feed it. I've never had a cat so I don't have any kind of cat food.

Go to the store real quick and get cat food. It should be less than a dollar per can. It smells like shit so be alarmed when you open it. Petsmart would be a good choice.

Obviously cat food is the best, since it's manufactured with everything needed in mind.
But you can make do with tuna, ham, chicken, some cheese, etc. Cats need meat in their diet.

Check if you have any tuna, cats just love fish!
Also, give it some milk or just water to drink.

| Lot's of cats are lactose intollerant so unless you want it shitting all over your house, keep the milk away from it.

Don't feed a cat god damned milk, it will have terribad diarrhea.
Feed it any meat, maybe some bread. Chicken, steak, just meat, they are carnivores and meant to be strict meat eaters, but can handle canned food and dry cereal food for cats.
Give it cat food, wet/canned preferably, if you don't have that, get it meat. | I knew that :3

My cat fuckin loves milk, and it doesn't give her any problems. Depends on the cat I guess.
@OP
Any type of meat should be fine, if she's a stray she's probably used to eating whatever she can get her paws on so she shouldn't be too picky, but you can't go wrong with cat food.

When my cat has milk, it goes and shits in my bath.

Mine too! Well, I have two cats. My cat, Snowbell, likes cheese, doritos, chips, and other weird stuff. The weird thing is, she does not like certain kinds of wet food yet she can hear a bag of doritos being opened from 100 yards away and then she goes bonkers. I've also caught her licking the grease off of a pan... So yes, we'll put that in the "other weird stuff' category. Now to Pete... Pete is a girl, but my Dad insisted on naming her Pete because he thought Pete was a boy. Pete does have certain characteristics of a boy dog though, she loves to kill things, she eats anything, even the garbage, she chases her tail, she plays fetch, and she barks.
So yeah, I have one cat who is picky in the most random, weird way and one cat who just about eats anything.

You did the right thing..
If it had a collar it will prolly find it's way back home.
Cats are really good at that..
Once my cat went missing for 4 weeks and then finally came back home..
Later on I found out that he had went door-to-door to get food..
