As a first one, I would recommend Java since it's a friendly introduction to OO programming. Otherwise C. Do not choose assembly whatever people tell you as a first language.

Of course, there is no "best language".

I'd prefer asm or c++ but your question is to vague...

Part of programming is picking the correct tool for the job.

It's like asking - what do you prefer killing a fly with?

( ) Fly swatter
( ) bazooka
( ) hand

All work - but I'm just a bazooka would be more fun... You'd have to buy a fly swatter... Your hand leaves you with a tasty treat..

Ok so long metaphor but - hopefully you get my point. They all have uses, just choice your weapon wisely.

Honestly, out of all of those if you want to learn it, it depends on how much effort you're willing to put into it.

If you don't want to put any effort into it, go VB. Yes, it's a bad language, but it's also incredibly easy to learn (hence, Visual BASIC), and doesn't require much effort.

I'd say go C# if you don't want to put TOO much effort into it, but you'll still put a good bit.

If you really wanna go for it, like seriously do it, then I suggest C++ or ASM. Those are the hardest, but they are definately the most powerful, and can do a lot more than the other languages.

I just thought I should point out that BASIC is an acronym, it doesn't really "mean" basic in the literal sense. It means beginner. (I wonder why...) Rolling Eyes

Basic means it is easy, beginner means it is worthless. Wink

No he hasn't, his post is his own opinion. C++ is a effective language. C, C# and C++ are good languages for games. Heck, MapleStory was written in C++. And you can make games based on CMD in C++.

Just to point out, Thlump, if you're talking about the console, when you say CMD, then a lot of languages can do that--Pascal, Delphi, C++, C#, etc.

Though I do agree with what you're saying. ;)

To compile stand alones that do not require any dlls or run times try C++ and Delphi as well as asm

Both of those languages require a runtime. Certain compilers statically link the libraries by default (pros: "standalone", cons: fat executables, redundant memory usage) instead of dynamic linking (pros: small, fast cons: requires you to distribute the dlls)
