There are different levels of modding.
Ranging from simply flashing your drive to having to do actual solder work...
So just because someone modded their Xbox 360, doesn't necessarily mean they hack games.
If you want to mod your Xbox 360 it's recommended you either know what you're doing, or get someone to help you or do it for you, that knows what they're doing.
Because modding it voids the warranty, so yeah...
If you already have it modded just go to a mod community.
Don't know one?
Use google.

you shouldnt mod your 360, especially if you plan on going on xbox live.
they detect modified files/firmware so you get banned when it detects the modifications that are made. and when you get banned, your entire 360 is banned, not just the account.
unless you know exactly what you are doing, i would stick to the old xbox's, they are fun to modify

Not quite...
First off, hardmodded 360s are almost impossible to detect by microsoft if done properly.
With firmware you stand a greater chance of being banned but, if you use the right firmware, you can go on Xbox live no problem.
Just do your research before you start flashing.
=P
As for getting banned, they just ban your Xbox and Xbox live accounts.
Xbox live can be a pain if you have a long term card, but otherwise it's no big deal...
Unless you happen to actually care about your gamerscore.
In which case, you shouldn't be modding in the first place since it'd be gained illegibly.

You can also play through a tunnel, and not worry about playing xbox live. They are just as active with games on those then xbox live.
I have 2 modded regular xbox's. Executor3 and Xenium Spice chips.
Im sure it is the same for xb360 as well.
Just cost more because your using a laptop hard drive, and they are more expensively priced.

personally i wouldnt want to even risk a ban on my 360, for the sake of using xbox live on it.
edit:
oh hey if you have xbox live, what is your gamertag?
