[test],[test+4],[test+8] would be correct but then all of a sudden [test+12] would be in location [test+10] [test+16] would be in [test+14] etc..

It's possible the data is not aligned.

Offsets are in hexadecimal. i.e. [test+12] is 0x12, or 18 in decimal.
