"I was spanked and I turned out okay"
"..Except I now take psych meds and advocate parents spank their kids"
This is exactly what you sound like when you claim that jailing people and giving them a permanent criminal record for drug related offenses/addictions actually "helps" them. It is actually scientifically proven that addictive tendencies arise from traumatic experiences. So essentially, America is punishing victims of severe trauma/mental illness.
Addiction is listed as a mental illness officially on the DSM too, but it's recognized only in Canada and not the States _________________

yeah what do i know. its not like im a sober drug addict who has experience on both sides of the spectrum and share the same thoughts that countless other sober people ive met share. its not like youre still a drug luser.
if someone doesnt have consequences for their actions they continue to do that action. if a kid is not raised properly and isnt punished when they do something bad they learn they can get away with whatever.
addiction is like an incurable but treatable disease. if you have hiv you have to take medication the rest of your life to treat it. the treatment for addiction is sobriety. in case youre confused look up the disease model that is used by medical professionals today.
addiction doesnt strictly stem from traumatic experiences. there are a ton of factors involved in addiction. to single out one thing would be dumb. not only that but your example is statingthat traumatic experience as going to jail which makes no sense because theyre already a drug addict. furthermore, jail is not a trautic experience; it is unpleasant at worst.
qhat i stated was that had i not gone to jail i would not have been sober even a day and would have continued to believe that it was impossible for me to get sober. i was convinced up to that point that i was fucked and nothing would change that. but thats because i never was able to go a day (on my own) without a drug in my body.
the reason addicts stop using is when they reach what is called their bottom; when the cumulative consequences of their using far outweights the benefits and the drugs stop working and life becomes unbearable. they become desperateto crawl out of the deep hole they dug themselves. this bottom is different for each indivudual. for most jail alone is not enough to stop them. but most drug addicts that are using hard drugs are also committing serious crimes. they may not get caught for those crimes and just get caught with drugs. either way theyre breaking the law and going to jail. drugs are illegal for a reason. they destroy lives.
i understand that its hard for you to comprehendw ith your biased one sided opinion and your view is further skewed because youre butthurt about going to a mental hospital but realize you are talking about a subject when you arent fully informed and that information is only available through experience.
had there been no consequences as a result of my using id either be still using or dead. _________________

I never said jail was a traumatic experience
I said victims of trauma are more likely to resort to substance abuse to cope with their underlying mental health issues

Yeah, except that substance abuse is a mental illness, it's not something people do for "fun" or because they enjoy doing it, in your own words, people eventually build a tolerance. So it is absurd to use the word "punished when they do something bad", because that is victim blaming. You wouldn't "punish" someone with a shitty life who harms himself or has harmed himself in the past, why do the double standards come in when it comes to addiction? Well because, the stigma is artificially constructed by pharmaceutical companies to further the agenda of the War on Drugs.
Facts remain: Addiction is a mental illness, and the only way to treat it is through a caring environment with a supportive medical team in the absence of law enforcement (because they can be triggering and lead to psychosis as they did for me). Withdrawal symptoms are not something you can treat by tossing someone in a cell with a big black guy named Hubba Bubba _________________

i specifically stated in my last post that i do not believe jail cures addiction. i am simplying doing something you should have learned in english class when writing persuasive essays; arguing for both sides. you were stating a negative whereas i was stating a positive. _________________
