When I use

cout << pointed << endl;

the value of pointed does not change and gives the output I want it to

but when I call pointed here

if(pointed = 400)

the output of pointed is always equal to 400.

Why is this happening?

Because "pointed=400" changes pointed to 400
if you wish to compare it against 400 do pointed==400
