I think the statement of the whole thread from the very first question has been answered with proof. Thats all the thread starter wanted. Not a argument or who is right or wrong, or who thinks it is or not. Google for the case of "Blizzard sues Game Hackers". Read it and make your choice.
People here is going off of assumptions of what they have heard from others. Well i drew my own conclusion from a real life situation, not from what someone says. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want, thats ok. But when facts are shown the real truth of a situation comes out. |
Exactly, you are permitted to communicate with the server, ie. whatever you send can't be blamed on you because you were permitted to communicate with the server.
Anyway I don't think that they look at every packet to see what time it was sent and what happened in it. With games that this matters they have protection against it (encrytping packets) because it could actually mean something. Like getting RS gold which you could sell for real money, or Habbo credits etc etc.
Basically: if it would be illegal, it would be difficult to actually do it.

As most of us said alter the server itself by packeting to compromise the actual pc server or if you use packets to gain $ or in game Money to sell on websites to people for real money you can get in trouble.
If you packet your way in a game to teleport and spam skills and stuff i doubt they will even blink at you. , just ban your account maybe.
Some servers may log packets, i doubt it tho. But they do log instances such as How quickly someones in game cash has went up in a time frame of game play. Try hosting a Ragnarök server. You will see what is logged.
Skills used,$,items, chat, level, location, trades and a number of things, pretty cool you can monitor everything in this game.
Sort of a example or what could go down: "Nothing special"
First week in the game. Build is normal.
3 days later you have 2 million in game cash,
Start looking at logs and find out that someone handed you the cash in game.
Look at that persons ip and accounts that did the handing, Looks like a farmer or botter.
ban botter accounts, and possibly the buyers. maybe just remove the in game cash.

Whenever you do something with computers ask your self these 3 questions
- Are you doing something too someone elses property that they have not agreed to that can damage it or more importantly create downtime that takes away from thier income?
-Are you going to profit from the coding of another person? (see the DCMA)
-By altering the packets are you in someway rerouting them? (It's not fun being arrested for tunneling through another person's computer even though you didn't touch anything on thier system)
Other than that nothing is really illegal in a true legal sense. All they can do is remove your service as I'm sure you agreed to in the TOS when you installed the game.

I disagree, you are modifying memory and no-one owns that. You are not modifying the client at all unless you permanently patch the code in the exe.
If you packet edit and modify server data you are in the red simply because that is owned by the person/company's on their server. |
You are only changing the stream of data, not the server files ( WTF!) For the last time, you won't get sued or any bullshit like that, unless you actually break into the server.

Friendly fix (I mean no harm ): It's DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act)
