I fucking hate painting and I fucking hate realism but in order for me to advance as an artist I have to understand them.
This is my first attempt at a realistic-type portrait.
1.a. This is my foundation that I quickly drew that I'll be attempting to paint over.
2.a. This is my first attempt; two-layer type coloring with grayscale on top and color on a layer underneath it. Looked like shit so I saved a copy and reverted back to 1.a. to try again.
2.b. This is my second attempt; pure greyscale. I overdid it though and it turned out shitty, too. Saved a copy and reverted to 1.a.
Sorry this all looks so shitty now; trying to improve.
Currently about 6 hours in; playing with another technique.
This time no matter what happens I will just keep working at it; if I fuck up I'll just paint over it and try again. Will update as I go.

3.a. Laid down a grey foundation so I can see the colors easier; started messing around with skin tones and such. Looking okay.
6.a. -effort makin'- Shaped face a bit more; more skin tone experimentation. Eyes are hard.

Because he's used to drawing anime and this is the closest shit to anime and human you can get without it being weird. Also he's asian.

whatever fits you is the best.
but its undeniable that realism is not your forte.

there's so many settings i haven't even explored yet, like brush types and various tools; also Persistence is a really hard setting to understand.
i think essentially persistence is like how the new color interacts with other colors on the canvas? idk.
still just dicking around and hoping it works like i want it to.
something is off about one of the eyes but i couldn't fix it after like 30 minutes of free manipulation so i gave up for now
also i need to define my nose more but ugh it's so hard LOL
