I'm planning to put together a budget gaming build for a friend and I was wondering if any AM3 socket motherboard would be compatible with the Phenom II X6 series.
There are so many different chipsets available for AMD and I was wondering if they made any differences.

It really depends on what you want. If you want cfx/sli, maybe decent OC ability. I love msi, but some don't think as highly of them anymore. Personally before I was given my 890fxa-gd70, I had my eyes on this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128521
I suggest AM3+ ready boards, just to keep yourself/friend set for the future. I'm hearing not all AM3 boards are getting a bios update for am3+, so just a fail safe. For 90 bucks that board is pretty decent. Of course no onboard gpu.
I'd grab a high end Phenom II x4 before they are gone. The FX series is taking over, but I hear its not on par with the Phenom II x4. The FX series however can OC/use turbo and gain clocks well over 4.0ghz on air. Around 4.6ghz on air and 4.9ghz on water I've read. Phenom II x4 965 kick the shit out of II x6 by a mile.
The chipset its self only slightly differ, as far as I've seen. Depending on age.

But of course. Its an am3 socket.
Rule of amd: Todays boards ram = socket. So am2 boards use ddr2, am3 boards use ddr3.

Alright thanks bro.
What difference do these chipsets make. Like what's the difference between this 870 chipset than something else.
