Now, i'm still learning about all of this. I have chosen Alienware M17x Laptop for my gaming laptop. I've looked at some of the specs and I wanted to know, if alienware products are a good choice? If it isn't a good choice, can you guys tell me what would be good for the latest games for pc and stuff?

M17x is real good. Alienware is known for their substantial performance, quality, and support.

Are you sure you want a laptop? Generally, home built desktops have a better bang for your buck in terms of gaming performance. You could build a desktop with better gaming performance than the laptop, and buy a small portable laptop on the side all for much less than the price of the Alienware. However, if you have your heart set on a laptop for gaming, don't get a 17 inch laptop. Really. You will not like lugging that thing around, unless your intention is to have it sit on your desk and not move, in which case you should definitely just build yourself a desktop.

So, for your desktop are you planning on buying a pre-build from somewhere like PC world, a custom one from somewhere like maingear or buy all the parts and build it yourself?

Personally i would go for the buy and build yourself, that's what i did because you will get way more for you money but because you are building it yourself the warranty that you get is for each part not the computer as a whole so if it stops working somehow its harder to get it fixed.

Good choice! Alienware might be good, but I think it's overpriced too much whereas you could buy yourself a midrange laptop for less or a high end gaming PC.

I laughed pretty hard at this sentence. Sorry but I can't agree with this at all.

I have an Alienware laptop, which I got when I was younger and had that urge to own one just because the cases looked cool. To which I regret making that choice years later down the road.

Their performance is sub-par at best. And god help you that your system makes it to you in one piece and without issues or you will have a fun shipping game of tennis with them to keep sending your system back for repairs. After a short while my laptop already began to just overheat just being on to the point now where a few years later I can't even watch YouTube vids on it without it shutting off.

Their quality is horrible. The best part of them is their looks. Think of Alienware as a cooler looking Mac. The paint on the cases is lacking for a gaming machine and will start to fade fairly fast. The screens protective film will wear/peel off in months of using it. The battery died fully after less then a year of owning it.

Their support is Dells. They were bought out. If you know how Dell is, it's all outsourced India people that barely speak English, read every answer out of a book, and hardly help.

You are better off looking into another brand of laptops. I highly recommend not getting an Alienware.

Just some history before my story:
I purchased a Core i7-920, 12GB RAM desktop for $2000 in November 2009.
My friend purchased a 13" Core-i7640M, 8GB RAM alienware laptop in December 2010 for $2500.

He scores a 21sec for 1M superpi today.
I score 9sec for 1M superpi today.

He takes his laptop on holidays. It sits on the desk for the other ~330 days of the year.
My desktop always sits on my desk.

His Alienware reaches unsafe temps (80+) within a few minutes of starting up COD6.
My desktop stays below 70C while using 100% of its CPU.

He is unhappy with his forfeiture of $2500.
I am extremely happy with my payment of $2000.

That is the story of Alienware laptops.

Alienware is a lot like Apple, way overpriced parts but reliable builds and support.
The only difference is Alienware is thrice as good and can play games etc.
Still better to build yourself though.

Alienware is more overpriced that apple.

You buy the same specs for half the price. Plus, you people saying alien ware makes nice comps, they just pack them together, you don't make anything of their own. Except for a few accessories.

laptops are fine, get it better cooling if it overheats for you. a laptop cooler, or a stand steel stand that isn't just a solid flat surface so air can actually get to it.
