According to this article, scientists at the LHC performed an experiment in which subatomic particles appeared to have completed the circuit faster than light would have.

It's been known for a while that there are particles that move faster than the speed of light.

I don't have a citation, so you'll have to go by my word on this one, but I remember talking about these particles with my brother at one point. He said they were called 'God Particles' as they were apparently the first particles formed after the big bang.

They have a scientific name for these particles, but I have no idea what it is. I'd have to talk to my brother to get the name if he still remembers it.

Also they can apparently slip between dimensions or something along those lines. Scientists have been trying to prove this part of the theory so that they can prove parallel universes.

:\

I don't think that's true, considering you have no citation and that if that were true, this new discovery wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Like I said, I'd have to speak to my brother getting that scientific name. Then I could quickly do a search and see if it was true or not. I'm not sure if it is true or not unless I can get another source.

Then again they may have been theorizing about this particle. I'm not 100% certain of any of this and I'm sorry if I came off as such.

Higgs boson?
We don't know if it exists yet, so we can't take for granted that it travels at a speed beyond that of light.

>People without theoretical physics degrees attempting to grasp and theorize over implications.

nope.avi

We can all sit around dreaming up what it might mean, but Id rather wait for:

a) The scientist to figure out if the test results were legitimate and not the product of some minor error. An important part would also be to see it happen again. And again.

b) The scientists tell me how this affects their theories on the world, and the engineers tell me exactly how I can profit out of this in terms of new commercial products.

They've repeated the experiment 15,000 times over the last 3 years.

You're trying to say that they've been overlooking some minor detail for the last 3 years? You're trying to say that they made the same error 15,000 times?

I mean, I'm all for letting the scientists figure out what this means, but to reject their findings as an error is simply being stubborn.

Ah, I was basing my errors portion on a different article posted, not this one. I suppose it would still be nice to see other laboratories achieve the same results. And if we had to speculate any possibilities, 15,000 errors with one machine is possible, if the machine itself contains some form of flaw (which is unlikely, but once again, speculation). Either way, enormous find for scientific community, means little to me however, as I cannot afford the equipment to test it, lack the knowledge to grasp its implications (I cant even understand their equations) and do not believe its something that will immediately produce some new commercially viable idea.

P.S. Getting old? Starting to feel the wear of time? Bombard your body with neutrinos, to bring back that youthful skin and shed off years.

Yeah they're really hoping for another independent group to achieve the same results at this point.

And while I agree it means little to us directly, I think it's humorous how the last ~106 years of scientific research and discovery on how the universe works was based on a flawed theory.

Nothing new there. Science doesnt pretend to have all the answers, nor does mathematics. It is a human way of rationalizing and extending their control over their environment, not some infallible and concrete rules of the Universe discovered by man.

One of the top sci-labs in chicago, IL are going to be testing it soon.

Yeah Fermilabs, I live right by it (for all I know, their tunnel goes under my house). Before this discovery, they were going to shut down, but now they actually have something to do I suppose.

if this is ture, Einstein's law of relativity must be false.

particles faster than speed of light = time travel
