|
|
Hey guys,
I've figured out how to fix my blank desktop upon starting up the computer.
Here's what happens:
1) Boot computer
2) Computer reaches desktop, shows desktop background and mouse, but nothing else. (It skips the screen where you choose which account to log into, since there's only one account + the admin account)
3) When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Dlt, the screen turns black, but I'm still able to see and move the mouse.
4) I press Esc, and it goes back to showing the desktop background+mouse.
5) I press the sleep button on my keyboard, and it goes to sleep.
6) I press the power button on my computer and it powers up from sleep mode.
At this point, it goes to the log in screen, showing my one account. I click on the account and it logs in. Everything is returned back to normal. I can see my entire desktop, the icons, the start menu, etc.
What kind of problem is this? I don't want to keep putting my computer to sleep after every boot up.

Have you tried a system restore? It sounds like it could be a driver problem caused by a new driver from automatic updates or your drivers are simply out of date.

The problem is, I don't have any restore points. I just got rid of Vista, and installed this.
And all updates, except Service Pack 1, have been installed already.

This is a link to the latest driver for that 8600 GS just in case, but I think I found your real problem. I recommend buying a new graphics card anyway. That 8600 is going to restrict the ability of your phenom and 4gb of RAM when it comes to gaming.

If you can see and move the cursor but you have no icons on your Desktop but you can see your normal background, it sounds like Explorer itself is hanging and or not starting at all.
When you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL are you able to get to TaskManager?

Nope, when I hit that hotkey combination, my screen tries to to enter the "Lock this computer", "Switch User", "Log Off", "Start Task Manager", etc, but instead, turns completely black. Then at that point, when I hit Esc to get out of that, my screen goes back to showing my desktop background, and nothing else.
BUT! I went into Low Resolution mode, and installed an update called Service Pack 1. The problem is gone! :D
At least, I hope the problem is gone. After the update installed, the computer reset, and booted up in it's normal mode. My normal desktop loaded, with my desktop icons, the start menu, my gadgets, everything was appearing like it normally should've. Hopefully, my problem doesn't come up again.
Thanks for all your help though! I actually learned a lot from you guys.

I'm an nVidia guy at heart, so I think you should check out the 9500 GT. It's an inexpensive card with good performance.
