Yeah, it is hard, I'll admit.
Make sure when you're shooting that you crouch and prone to increase your accuracy. Get used to hitting both the second any bullets are shot.
[ and ] are your band-aid and medkit hotkeys. Use them. I personally always carried a fuckton of bandaids and medkits so I'd never run out. Eat all your food before you dig into medkits though, they tend to weight a little bit much for how useful they are. Make sure you always keep a little bit of food for your hunger.
When you run into the poltergeist, knife it, trust me.
Also note that gun stats are specific to their ammo type. Dark green < light green < brown.
I guess it depends on how far you are, but as soon as possible, go to the army warehouses and help Duty raid the Freedom base. Lots of the Freedom guys have G36s, which is arguably the best gun in the game, but suck up a shit ton of ammo.
When you go to Yantar, you'll be fighting mostly Zombies and Snorks, so make sure you stock up on plenty of ammo and shit, because you won't be picking up a lot from people there.
Also, go for headshots against people and zombies.

Wait I got it confused. That's a controller. Poltergeists are just flying balls of either electricity or fire, and you just shoot at those. Controllers are the things that fucking warp your mind around and shit. They're not to bad in SoC (I think that's the only one anyway), I believe there's one or two in Clear Skies, and there are a couple in CoP that are hard as fuck.
But yeah, knifing it in SoC is by far the easiest way to kill it. Additionally, you can just run by it if you want.
