I7 950
Asus Rampage III
6 Gigs of DDR3 1333MHz Corsair RAM

I am running almost nothing and I am using 40% of my RAM is this normal?

Yea its normal. I have 4gb and w7 uses about 1.7gb on idle, depending on when I rebooted last. After a reboot it idles 1.3. W7 likes to use ram as it pleases, just let it. When you need that ram it will be there.

In your Task Manager tick the check box in the bottom left that says "Show processes from all users". You show 24 running processes but Task Manager says you have 57.

Well that could be caused by a lot of processes running on the background. You could check what are running on start up and you could choose which ones to give authority.

I do not get it though how people are disappointed when their resources are being used. I mean would you not want to maximize the use of the hardware you have then just letting it lay around doing nothing.

That is completely normal though.

I usually don't worry about RAM issues, the reason you get lots of RAM is so you don't have to worry about it.
