|
|
I want to use VMWare, but what I intend to use it for may result in a few infections from time to time.
I'll probably even get a RAT at some point, which is why I want to know ahead of time :\
Is it possible for infections to transfer over from VMWare to my computer?
And if the VMWare OS gets infected with a RAT, will it affect my own computer in any way?
Thanks thanks. |

okay lol...
Yeah, I just thought it might be possible since all the files that have to do with the virtual machine are stored on your computer.
but okay, I guess this'll work out.
Thanks. |

Unless someone coded a virus to specifically spread to other partitions, I don't see how it would ever affect your actual OS (would your partitioned OS even have rights to your actual OS and other partitions?). All I foresee happening is your partitioned OS getting infectfucked and then you deleting the partition, the OS, and the motherfucker in the process.
Meh, Google probably has a more definitive answer.

Google just said you're fucked. I guess most coders who aren't idiots are going to cover their bases and make sure to fuck you in all your partitioned assholes. Don't do it, bro. |

| It can't. A partition and a vm are separate things. The only connection is the NAT which you share the Internet on. As long as that is secure you're fine |

| If you're that paranoid use a sandbox on the VM. |

| Emulate an os while emulating an os while emulating an os. |

Explain to me how they are different? The way I see it a VM is a partition that you can run in realtime with your OS. |

Uhh the vm runs on top of the current os in its own isolated sandbox. Maybe you're getting confused with virtualised systems running on top of a hypervisor. The vm is not an os that is running concurrently as the host. It runs as a layer above it.. Sort of like a regular application |

Ok, you're saying the VM runs default as a sandbox, but I remember it where you'd have to play around in VMware's settings to enable that. Without the sandbox, there's nothing stopping a virus from jumping partitions. Just because the VM is a realtime application doesn't negate the fact that it is a partition in a partitioned HDD, and a virus can partition hop.
EDIT: What I've found is that the virtual environment itself cannot spread viruses to the host (lolwutwhy), but the VM can be used maliciously with loopholes such as network connection between the VM and OS.

Basically I was going to say this.
Sandbox restricts file access for programs, including viruses, so if you make a vm for a partition, then sandbox that vm so it can't break its own rules when under the influence of a virus, YOU'RE GOOD TO GO YEP MMHMM. |
