So my mom was searching for pictures of butterflies on Google. She finds a photo that actually interests her, so she clicks on it. The website hosting the image had more up, so she closed out the Google popup for the original image and looks at more when she gets redirected. It takes her to a fake AV hosted by .co.cc called Trusted Gaurd. Her shitty antivirus couldn’t do anything for her, so I got on her computer and removed it myself. I then reported it to Google, and tried to report it to .co.cc but it keeps rejecting the report. I tried resubmitting the abuse report a few times, but it was still being rejected. I haven’t done this before, and I know that further action should be taken. Any ideas?

This sort of thing is becoming more and more common. In the old days it was just pop-up windows that were annoyances. These days you have something called click-jacking, where you get redirected to malicious sites. What you have is something along the lines what I like to call extortion-ware.

There was one of these that was annoying but otherwise harmless, kept popping up that your computer has n viruses on it, pay x dollars to have them removed, in truth there was nothing on your computer. The program also strongly resembled Windows Security Center.

Reset your internet settings, lock down java and what it can do. It's a pain in the ass having to click ok on each little pop-up window, but worth it to keep from getting infected with something. On the opposite side I have seen people get so used to clicking OK they just click without reading what it is they are clicking.
