What is it exactly?
Explain in a DotA way I can understand.

your not your champion when your playing, your a summoner watching over the battle field in like a crystal ball or something and you control the champion you select. You get to use the champions abilities and then you get a few summoner spells you may choose from also. Your summoner can level up gaining new spells and abilities to aid the champion you select.

watch this video, 20 seconds in those are the summoners controlling the guys on the battlefield.

you're some person with a high concentration of pigment in his skin that can choose different hos to level up with by fighting in street fight
by pimp slapping, you get more domination over hos
as you level up, the more competition

How come you can control the skills of the hero then?
