				| You seem to be forgetting that Steam coming to Linux, doesn't mean that the games available on Steam will be coming to Linux as well. Although the Valve games are written in a way that will allow you to play them on Linux, doesn't necessarily mean other games will as well. It's all about openGL versus DirectX really. Games that use OpenGL can be played on any OS, while games that use DirectX can only be used on an OS that is based on Windows (due to the .NET framework usage 'n stuff).
Point being that not only games are written in/on .NET, but software as well (look at the Office packages). The beauty of the open-source community however, is that they provide wonderful alternatives, like Open Office. And if all else fails, like you mentioned before, you have Wine to make Windows based applications usable on a Linux OS.

I personally adore Ubuntu, but I hear Gentoo is wonderful as well. I have used Ubuntu on my work laptop, and have never really gotten any issues other than a lack of an e-mail client that supports exchange. If you decide to use a Linux OS, you have to be willing to go the extra mile to make certain things work. But in terms of customization and flexibility, the OS is well worth the change from Windows.

On a sidenote: I know everyone adores MacOS for its intuitive and aesthetic design, but it's even more limited than Windows is. Keep that in mind when purchasing a machine.

				| Beastly. I'm contemplating the switch as well, but am torn because I make extensive use of iTunes, and have bought songs from the iTunes store. My second issue is the lack of exchange support in available e-mail clients. Aside from that I could make the switch instantaneously, although it would be a huge waste of my GFX card. Since I bought a 400 euro graphics card, and will severely lack the ability to play a fair amount of games (aside from WoW, which works perfectly on Ubuntu).

I'm just writing stuff from hearsay (as I personally never made use of it), so I could be completely wrong, but development which makes use of the .NET framework automatically guides you in the DirectX direction, or so I've heard.

DirectX is it's own API. dot net programs can use it, like XNA

EDIOSO: There's no need to 'switch', you can dual boot just to have a mess.

Linux is becoming waaay more popular and even the open source nvidia drivers support 3d now

W7 is a stabler+sexier version of Vista, I don't see why you wouldn't make the switch.
