| Hey, i've been searching everywhere on the internet for a decent tutorial explaining on how to initialize directplay to host and open your game so other players can join, for a game like: Age Of Empires. I didn't find any tutorials on this subject so I came here, does anybody have any background knowledge on DirectPlay and how to use it to host your game. If you can also provide some tutorials and links, that will be helpful. |

If you are looking to learn DirectPlay to actually use it in your own project(s), don't. DirectPlay was Deprectiated back in 2007 and removed from the DirectX SDK since. (It was replaced by Games For Windows - Live!)
If you are looking for information regarding make your game multiplayer, there are plenty of game engines that are open source you can look at to get a jist of how some of those incorporate networking into their games.
Most of the Quake games are open source which is one good place to start.
Quake 3's source:

| Its not my game that I want to make multiplayer or else I wouldn't of even messed with DirectPlay in the beginning. Its a game that uses DirectPlay, and doesn't have any startup agruments for me to start the game up. So the alternative I hear is to use DirectPlay which most clients that support the game use to host a game so other players can join. The game is Age of Empires, I know its old but even since MSN Zone was closed many players have went to Voobly (which sucks) so I just want to know how it works so if I even do make my own client I know how to host the game up. |
