However, in Survival mode, it is possible to obtain sponges by placing them in the map in creative mode and loading the file in survival. The sponge functions the same here, as well as in Indev. Sponges do not work on the new dynamic water system currently in Infdev.

sponges won't be added in survival, ever. They were a temporary fix for flooding in creative mode. If you ever do get flooded in survival, use buckets to fix it.

it's not extremely common. You have to do some spelunking. Spelunking is when you go explore caves and look around for ores. The lower you go the more rare the ores are. Read more on ores in the wiki and what kind of pic you need to mine it.

You're doing it wrong. Make them out of cobblestone, not shitastic wood because even if you did come across some iron, you wouldn't be able to harvest it.

If you find gold, do not make tools out of it. It's as durable as wood. Instead, find a dungeon, take the apple from the chest, and cover it with gold. It will heal full hearts.
