I try to join irc://irc.esper.net/minecraft/ and it says "You are not on a channel"
How do I fix that?

Type:
/server irc.esper.net
/join #minecraft
Close client because you find out you don't know what they're talking about

clients make no sense to me

and if i join one nobodies on
and then if its down it tries every fucking second and i have to find "disconnect"
