Is it that much better than a 5970? After all, by just overclocking a 5970 a little bit, it would have the same exact specs as 5870 x 2.

5970 = 2 5850.
The ASUS Ares, oh man, dual 8x pin + 1 6pin, this shit is going to be mad.
Who say you can't masturbate to hardware?

Fuck me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 5970 2 of a cypress core that's different from either the 5850 or the 5870? It has the preocessor count (x2) of a 5870, but the clock speed of a 5850.

The HD5970 is actually 2x HD5850 not HD5870.
Like other dual GPU cards, it's always been like this.
Unless it's something special.
e.g.
reg: GTX295 is actually 2x GTX260
SE: Asus MARS uses 2x GTX280

Since were on topic of 5800 series. Why is the 5830 clock speed greater than the 5850?

Less SPU (Stream Processing Units)
HD5830: 1120
HD5850: 1440
HD5870: 1600

Hmm, last time I checked each gpu on a 5970 had 1600 processors, and the gpu ona 5850 has only 1440.

After checking out further, my mistake your right.
The HD5970 has the same amount SPU to a HD5870, but clock speed to a HD5850.
I guess most users will be pissed to think they have a uber high-end card, only to find out it uses a pair of 2nd best GPUs.
