Can someone explain the appeal of minecraft to me :s
All I've seen are screenshots and they all just show the horribad graphics. It just didn't look like a game anyone would pay for, so there must be something amazing I'm missing

Yes, you're missing the concept.
Have you ever played that flash game Motherload by xgen studios?
Where you dig down into the ground looking for precious ores, take them back to the surface, sell them, upgrade stuff, go back down, etc.?
Minecraft is like that in the sense you dig for ores, but instead of selling them you get to smelt and craft materials with them.
Which is like upgrading, because then you can get better ores.
Also, for every block that you destroy, you can pick it up and place it somewhere else, leading to the construction/terraforming feature.
It's a giant sandbox.

I bought the game straight away. I suggest you do the same. It's worth a good 20 hours for me and still playing every now and then. Prolly not gonna be more then 0,10$/hour price.
