I prefer a cat, I can actually pick it up and hug it. My dog's just running around pushing things over.

Personal preferences, it all comes to that in the end. I prefer my dog, I love my cats, I really do, but I just find my dog more loving(is that correct?). Also my pets love eachother and both of my cats sleep on the dog(Saint Bernard)
Also the cats are jealous of the dog and vice-versa.

When there's no threat to another, the dog will leave the danger. When there's something of value inside -- for example a human in danger -- the dog is most likely to either call for help(as countless reported events can account for) or go in and lead you out to safety(as countless reported events can account for.) If you're considering this as an act of stupidity because they are just following orders while disregarding their own safety, you are also calling the same humans who do these jobs stupid -- these include firefighters, cops, soldiers, etc. As for the starvation part, that's up to the owners. We're talking about pets -- not economic factors.

btw, I'm saying dogs are better -- i could care less about cats being "smarter". It's like comparing a fireman to a mathematician -- one will have more use in almost any real life situations than the other.
Dogs as pets are more valuable, more useful for your physical and mental health, and an overall greater addition to a family. <3
Point made.

Enjoy your walking houseplants.

Apparently this has drifted to a conversation where dogs are useful in real life situations? And yet, my Belgian shepherd fled the scene when my cat, a part of our family who walked with us in the forest when we walked the dogs, was attacked by two retrievers. She came back when all danger was averted by me and my little brother, with a ball in her mouth, like we didn't just fight with two dogs to get our cat to safety. You talk about real life situations as if you have ever experienced such a thing. Well I have, and I can attest that not every dog will do such a thing (the aforementioned situation is why I dislike my Belgian Shepherd btw, I dislike the other one because she used to eat poop out of the cats litterbox). With a cat I know where I stand. They can be great pets, but they won't SUBMIT to your every bidding. They lie with you at cold nights, give you their prey to show their love for you, and the spinning has actually proven to be very therapeutic for sick people. What you want is a slave that has no real will of it's own, what I have is more of a friendship than what you claim to have with your dog.

Ive found it can go both ways, a cat can have the personality of a dog and a dog can have the personality of a cat.

Also, towards the protecting your cat situation it depends on the breed and how they're trained. For example German Shepards are extremely protective of their owners and other animal friends.

Neither dog nor cat has its personality set in stone. So let us stick to the facts:

#1 Cats are cleaner (according to our germ-standards)
#2 Cats are smarter (IQ-wise)
#3 Cats learn by observation, dogs learn by repetition
#4 Cats are trained by their mother, no need for potty-training for example (#2 & #3 are the cause of that)
#5 Cats are with you out of their own volition, as they don't depend on the pack. Dogs can not survive out of their pack, as they hunt in groups.

Off the top of my head. There is probably more, but then I would no longer stick to only facts.
