I just realized how incredibly fucked up it is that countries such as the USA put such a high value on 'jocks', on an academic level. I've heard stories of how athletes pass their high school and college education by doing nothing but sports, and getting a free pass for whatever classes they took on the side.
I myself live in the Netherlands, and we DO NOT give free passes to people who are good at sports. In fact, 'sports' are not even a fucking academic accomplishment here. Do you know why? Because they aren't. Physical accomplishments have nothing to do with intellectual feets. But apparantly, schools value the money that comes with sports so much, they'll gladly 'assist' (with this I mean cheat) their athletes through whatever educational path they wish to pretend to have followed. This leads to burned up 30 year old athletes who are too fucking stupid to wipe their own ass, but are able to pretend like they've made an academic accomplishment.
tl;dr: Why do countries such as the USA treat athletes as if they are accomplishing something on an academic level? Shit is fucking ridiculous.

| The UK seems to be the same as the Netherlands. You can take sports in college/uni but you dont really get anything from it.

Due to the daily amount of growth hormone intake, the Dutch are actually bigger than Americans on average. Yet the 'big boys' here still work hard for their academic accomplishments.

/rant | Agreed, in my classes, I have seen athletes get away with cheating on tests and even telling the teacher to shut up and talking back to him, as well as generally disrupting class and being so thick that it pulls us behind schedule, but the teacher doesn't kick them out, because then they wouldn't be able to play in a sport. It's ridiculous.

Schools don't make money off sports, If anything they lose a very large amount of it.
Those free passes you hear about are movie magic, Hardly does it ever happen in real life.
You completely misunderstood my post, I was implying that it wasn't for lonely idiots and for "successful" people such as hot girls and people who are good at sports.

it isn't as evident in Canada as it is in the U.S., but it definitely happens.

Total bullshit.
No matter how amazing you are at soccer, football, basketball, baseball or any other sports you still have to work to graduate. You cant get by just by being good at sports, you've heard wrong. If athletes do get by from just sports then its a single teacher twisting and breaking the rules. My school dosent give me jack shit for doing sports and it dosent give anyone else free passes either. If you live in another country then you dont know. Its like me saying that if your good at eating in England you can graduate from just eating.

In the Netherlands I am pretty sure you have institutes separate from Universities and colleges where you can do sports. The closest you can get to sports in college here is by studying to become a trainer or something. But it's a pretty intense course, as you have to know all of the muscle groups, bone groups, etc. You do sports mostly to learn about the physical limitations and such.

@SchoolsMakingMoneyOffSports: I naturally assumed that they would. I figured if a school had a popular team, it would generate more students per year, meaning more money from said students. But I assumed wrong apparently. I guess those jackets and sporting materials are taken out of the schools budget. You know what we do here? We ask students to bring their sports clothing, and the schools hire a sports hall for a fixed amount of hours. It sure saves a lot of money for real education.
@Freepasses: Yet HackØtaku seems to have witnessed this 'magic' you speak of.
I didn't misunderstand anything. I merely stated it made me realize something. Did I reply to your post? No, I did not. The jocks part made me realize your student hierarchy holds 'jocks' in high regards. Here in the Netherlands, these 'jocks' are non-existent in the student hierarchy. This lead to my rant.

If what Hackotaku says is true then he must go to a horrible school, The ONLY time i could see that ever happening is the coach/teacher combination. (when a teacher coaches after school)
