Took gogodr's advice and started from a plane.

as of now I have a basic human form. no face hands or feet though

well, that is a start.
very very simple and rough start but a start.

I would recommend you to do inorganic modeling first though.

well that is your problem.

not really , you can get very good at modeling in any program , but i would definitely recommend switching to max or maya. because there is alot more tutorials and videos about the tools and their uses that it would really benefit a beginner like yourself.
