Maybe you just thought it was cool? Anyway... What program is used to make this? Its pretty sweet, id like to fiddle around with it.

3dsMax if you go to the tutorial section I have many tutorials there that might help you if you want to explore with the program.

basic training videos are always recommended first though.

yeah , the gears dont seem to have any mechanical purpose other than they look cool, and is this just an animation or what it rendered in reactor?

but everything is modeled out very nicely.

actually its only purpose is mechanical. made with in real world scale attributes and rigged all in a functional way.
the mechanism transforms force into dynamic movement into periodic movement and into force again which activates the spring that shoots out the blade or pulls it back in.

and no it was not done in reactor. I did the manual rig by doing all the math in paper.
