PSN is free, but it's also not as good as a social tool and most PS3 games are P2P connections because if the developers want dedicated servers they have to foot the bill themselves.

Microsoft provides hosting services for many popular titles as well as having just a generally better online experience (Save for the people who use it)

That being said, PC is free *and* better than 360.
