It doesn't even play DVD sound, just the background music.

Just use VLC Player. If you really want (or need) to use WMP, install one of CCCP or K-Lite codec packs.

I use to be able to play DVD's normally but i can't now, i haven't changed any settings at all.

Never bothered to look up any details, but not all DVDs are handled the same way. I rented a DVD that wouldn't play on a crappy player, but would in VLC.
So again: solution is to use something else. If installing something is a problem, I'm sure there's a portable VLC player around...

Totally agree.
VLC Player is capable of playing most videos in the world.
No need to install codecs or have stuff running in the back ground.
