|
|
Hello all,
My motherboard has six DDR3 slots, which are currently occupied by 6 x 1GB DDR3 strips. Now I am contemplating on buying 3 x 2GB DDR3 from the same brand, at the same voltage, with the same MHz rate. Mind you that I currently have an Intel Core i7, which supports triple channel mode.
Would it be possible to keep three of my current 1GB DDR3, and replace the other three 1GB DDR3 with 2GB DDR3? I will obviously spread 3GB equally per two memory banks.
Kind regards,
Augustine

No, all your rams do need to be same, else they will run bad. I can't remember why but i know that it's bad idea.

Wrong.
you can mix ram for all your care, they will all clock to the same speed,
There is no reason to switch the ram anyway.

How so? If I add the three new strips of 2GB each, plus the remaining three strips of 1GB, I'll have 9GB of RAM.

Sure you can. Since they are all the same speed then there is no issue. If they are not all the same speed however, all your sticks will go as fast as the slowest one.

More ram doesn't make your computer better.

That's rather odd. I remember RAM being better than using the page file. Guess I've been lied to my whole life and my PC will run just the same if I swap my 1GB stick for a 128MB stick.

For better ram optimization it's recommended that you use the same brand, speed, voltage, and timings.
Ram does make your computer better and don't say 8GB is overkill cause for some users depending on the applications they run, 8GB isn't enough at all.
RAM>Pagefile

| Yes like they have already said you can mix ram. If it is a higher speed it will default back to the lowest ram speed. The more ram you add the more stain you place on your northbridge. so you might have to bump up the voltage on it if you get some blue screens or abnormal stuff starts happening.

I'm a real hippie when it comes to the hardware, it's mostly low voltage stuff. Intel processor to lessen heat and voltage in comparison to it's AMD equal, same goes for the RAM. Also a solid state drive upcoming month. Doubt the voltage will become an issue. The motherboard is also relatively new, and is capable of handling 24GB of RAM in total.
Thanks for the advice guys!
