Can someone tell me how do you make your screen resolution smaller when playing anykind of games?
cause when I was at my friend's house, he has Vista and everytime he plays a game, his laptop screen goes black and the game will appear in the middle of the screen.
I try messing with my setting, but that didn't work.
Here's an example:

I think it is built into the driver code or the way the monitor supports that certain resolution and jsut emulates it

Check the BIOS, there's usually an option for enabling stretching.

BIOSes have evolved since the beginning of computers saf, in fact the last laptop I was repairing had that exact option.

Usually the game controls the resolution it is being played at, check the game settings.

Actually, it can - the last three laptops I've had have offered scaling control for onboard GPU's.

I assumed he was only referring to laptops - sounds like an option in the game, or, it may not be possible depending on how it was written.

This has nothing to with the games nor your desktop, but more towards your monitor.

There are 2 types of LCD monitors, standard and wide screen.

On a standard monitor setting your game to any resolution and it will look fine. Although running on a low resolution like 640x480 will make it look big, but at least it's still a image in its proper aspect ratio.

Do the same thing on a widescreen monitor and you'll get a different story.
Widescreen monitors tend to force the resolution your using (Let say a game) to fit the whole screen thus making the image distorted and stretch out.

1:1 pixel mapping is what your looking for as it renders a image pixel by pixel.

e.g. Let's say you have a 22" wide screen with a resolution of 1680x1050.
The game want to play does not support widescreen resolutions and the maximum is 1280x1024. Without 1:1 pixel mapping and your game is stretched out.
With 1:1 pixel mapping and you will have the image display at 1280x1024 with a black border surrounding the image. More like the example picture you provided.

Note that not all widescreen have 1:1 pixel mapping and even though some do, manufactures rarely says it in their specs.
Some LCD (standard screen) also have 1:1 pixel mapping as well.

1:1 pixel mapping is extremely important to have if your planning to hook up your game console.
