Pain isn't the only reason that people use it. The high itself gives relief to a huge variety of things. Next time you have the flu or a cold, smoke a bunch and you'll know what I'm talking about. It makes me feel almost normal outside of physical symptoms (like runny nose, fever, etc). If it was legal, I would use it in place of any cough medicine or blood thinner, because it works that much better for me.
