Actually, sleeping pills have tryptophan in it, so it can make anyone asleep. Drinking causes you to be loose on your mind, so you go to sleep easier, but it's not recommended to drink too much.

Red wine is prefered.

I fixed it for you. A little bit of Red Wine is good for you.
And maybe you can abort the sleeping pills idea if it makes you too dependent.

Red wine is ONE alcoholic drink that's healthy, and would be a money sink if you decided to drink it to goto sleep. Also, you would have terribly yellow teeth. If you're dependent on sleeping pills, you can't sleep without them; thus rehab. Too much trouble, don't you think?

My strategy.

Turn on fan, have it pointing directly at face.
Listen to some relaxing music. (If I really cant sleep I go on youtube on my ipod and listen to classical.)
If there's a noise thats annoying me I use ear plugs.

Then I just try to clear my mind and relax.

Just try this: If you can't go to sleep do Push-Ups till you can't get up again, then rest. After, you do jumping jacks till you get too tired, after that rest until you feel better. Shower, dry up, sleep soundly.

exercise stimulates the body, so it wouldn't really help you goto sleep...and if it does, except a bad sleep.
