i dont have a cd to burn it to, so if i use daemon tools to mount the iso, then install it using custom install, will it work? will it reboot during the process, thus unmounting the disk

You can mount the .iso by using Alcohol 52% and install it without a cd. But if something goes wrong during the installation, you will need another OS burned on a dvd/cd

Disregard. I wasn't sure you could do that.

Well, it's pretty similar to Vista and VMWare had to detect it as SOMETHING since they didn't update for Windows 7. Maybe Windows made it like that so people like you could install on virtual PCs.
WHICH ISN'T TO SAY, of course, that you're stuck if you don't have a DVD drive or means of burning the DVD.
Look at this or learn how to put it onto a USB/flash drive. |
i dont want to replace my existing os. but i want to dual boot

Then partition your drive using something like Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.

The method I used:
- Partition, using a partitioning tool (obviously), your hard drive into
1. the partition of your current OS,
2. a 5GB NTFS partition after that, and
3. a 20~40GB NTFS partition at the end.
- Copy Windows 7 DVD contents into partition 2.
- Start installation by double clicking on Setup.exe (or eqv. setup names) in partition 2.
- Tell installer to install to partition 3. Continue with the installation.
- voila...? what's worth talking about?

Part 2 is totally useless.
Extracting the CD is useless too.
You can just mount it, explore the disk and run setup.exe
Then tell it to install to the other partition.

Correct for current Windows users!
I'm using ubuntu, so... Setup.exe couldn't really run off gmount-iso, wherever I mount it. WINEing it is just suicidal, and good luck with an ext3 driver for windows. Last I knew... they had up to ext2.

Lol'd.
Sorry I had assumed you were using Windows.
Although I don't understand how placing the Setup on a NTFS partition while still using Ubuntu would make WINEing it any less of a chore.
But then how would you run setup.exe from your OS? There isn't any reason why anyone would try this method while on a Linux distro. It just isn't practical.
OP is on Windows, though. What I said applies.
