Direct X11 is released for developers and is public on windows 7 and vista on windows 7 release.

There isn't anything like Direct X 12.

Wrong, cards that work with DirectX 10 will not work with DirectX 11.

Just look at DirectX 10 for now, all current Nvidia cards only supports DirectX 10 while the newer ATi cards supports DirectX 10.1

The cards we have now will support DirectX 10, but for a DirectX 11 game it run in DirectX 10 mode.

obviously, there will be missing hardward support for some things...

Microsoft had deliberately created a discontinuity between DX10 and DX9, but emphasized that "DX11 is totally compatible with DX10.”

... but most of it is probably API revision at this point, and driver fuckery. DX11 is the first multi-threaded version of the API. So, get your cores ready, there's draw calls to crunch.

Yes you do. You needed XP for DX9. You need Vista to use DX10. Isn't it logical you need Windows 7 for DX11?

Microsoft says one thing does not mean the hardware makers will follow it.
Sure DirectX 11 will be backwards compatible, but that's only the software part. For the hardware like graphic cards that is another story.

Just like wireless technologies, a wireless N router is backwards compatible with A,B, and G. In order for a user to take advantage of the "N" wireless protocol they must get themselve a new wireless card supporting the wireless N specs.

This is the same with DirectX.
You will still need a new card supporting DirectX 11 to take advantage of it.
