This is possible. It could also be used to store excess memories that would otherwise be forgotten. My theory is: It never had a use, and there haven't been any problems living without one, but what if we are supposed to MAKE a use out of it? We built our own civilizations, we brought technology this far, why shouldn't we eventually adapt OURSELVES as well as our lifestyles and capabilities? |
Not a bad idea actually.
May sound a bit strange to some people though. |
There will probably be a few people, probably of a religious group, that will find this wrong and inhuman.
While not wanting to start a flame war, I must say that it's the furthest thing from inhuman, because we are working WITH human, so to speak. |
Think of it as a second brain ey? |
A second brain, a third kidney, maybe even a second heart. Or we could develop a new individual use. The idea is that it's ours to make with it what we will. |
How about back-up Heart if you got a fatal disease? |
The only problem with a second heart is the fact that they'd have to attach artificial valves, but other then that, it's possible. |
What year do you think itll be established? |
No idea, with the current economy and everything going on spiraling around it. I don't think people have even started thinking about this possibility. I may study human genetics and try and do it myself when I come of age. |
Is studying Anatomy going to help? |
Technically yes, but everybody has a general idea of where the appendix is.

| So you're basically saying it's a second brain?

That, combined with computers being able to think, will be us existing for as long as the computer does. Sounds good to me :D

Or, we could have lots of possibilitys for what it could be, and then when a vital organ fails, the appendix can take its place?
Good idea?

This is retarded. You don't need a "memory bank" anywhere. Most of the DNA is made of junk code. Just get rid of that shit and add in the genes. =/
The only thing in this thread that actually has worth is the modification to become an organ storing stem cells.
The rest could be grown by stem cells and implanted. No need to modify the appendix.
Addressing regeneration... It is more efficient to modify all of your cells (when you're a zygote) to form blastemas even when you are an adult. Editing a portion of your body is a laughable method.
Anyways, possible functions:
| Quote: | Immune function
Loren G. Martin, a professor of physiology at Oklahoma State University, argues that the appendix has a function in fetuses and adults.[5] Endocrine cells have been found in the appendix of 11 week old fetuses that contribute to "biological control (homeostatic) mechanisms." In adults, Martin argues that the appendix acts as a lymphatic organ. The appendix is experimentally verified as being rich in infection-fighting lymphoid cells, suggesting that it might play a role in the immune system. Zahid[6] suggests that it plays a role in both manufacturing hormones in fetal development as well as functioning to 'train' the immune system, exposing the body to antigens in order that it can produce antibodies. He notes that doctors in the last decade have stopped removing the appendix during other surgical procedures as a routine precaution, because it can be successfully transplanted into the urinary tract to rebuild a sphincter muscle and reconstruct a functional bladder. |
| Quote: | Maintaining gut flora
Although it was long accepted that the immune tissue, called gut associated lymphoid tissue, surrounding the appendix and elsewhere in the gut carries out a number of important functions, explanations were lacking for the distinctive shape of the appendix and its apparent lack of importance as judged by an absence of side-effects following appendectomy. [8] William Parker, Randy Bollinger, and colleagues at Duke University proposed that the appendix serves as a haven for useful bacteria when illness flushes those bacteria from the rest of the intestines.[9] [10] This proposal is based on a new understanding of how the immune system supports the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria [11] [12], in combination with many well-known features of the appendix, including its architecture and its association with copious amounts of immune tissue. Such a function is expected to be useful in a culture lacking modern sanitation and healthcare practice, where diarrhea may be prevalent.[10] Current epidemiological data [13] show that diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death in developing countries, indicating that a role of the appendix as an aid in recovering beneficial bacteria following diarrhea may be extremely important in the absence of modern health and sanitation practices.[10]

Wait, so it's like a second brain?

it would require a rediculous amount of genetic engineering.

With all the stuff mankind has achieved, this is entirely possible.

The appendix was (use to be) our second stomach, just like cows have 4 stomach's, we use to have 2. We developed and lose the use for a second stomach so it because smaller and non functional

Who says we can't bring it back as a functioning organ in the future?

This theory is somewhat wild but very unlikely because if scientist changed how it actually worked then problems like mutation will occur because they havn't quite figued out stem cell research same with cloning they barely know how nucleuses work and it would be a very very very expensive thing to try and look into when there's no evidence that something like this could happen then again we could be flying in the next year or so with space ships so yeah. Funny theory

The Future.
It's the subject of this thread.
It couldn't be done NOW, but it could IN THE FUTURE.

| This is either a good question or really, really, stupid: Are there one or more bloodstreams that run through the appendix?
