Cheat Engine

My goal is to allow myself an unlimited amount of characters to be allowed for a name.

I attached cheat engine to my game
I found an address that had a text value of "17"
I ran Ollydbg and attached it to my game
I opened the game's module
i went to the address i found with cheatengine
I selected the line and did follow in dump->selection
I highlighted the text "17" in my dump window
I set a memory-write breakpoint
I reopened the game and typed a letter
ollydbg opened up and now i have this in my view

REP MOVS DWORD PTR ES:[EDI],DWORD PTR DS:[ESI]

If i wanted to freeze that 17 from changing, what should i do?

right click the address, and there should be freeze the address/ freeze all addresses in list

ok, so i helped you with the freezing thing correct. you need to know why your getting that message correct?

Find what writes to that address and replace the code with nop ...?

Is it a browser game. If so, you're killing a vital instruction with a NOP causing the crash.
