Why did it update things if you uninstalled it..?
Also, system restore to an earlier point just to be safe.

If you system restored those changes should be gone.
Try restoring to an even earlier point.

Size: 1.04 GB (1,120,701,130 bytes)
Size on disk: 813 MB (853,203,960 bytes)
Contains: 5,925 files, 211 folders
I have SP2 btw, so thats why it's probably different.

When you installed Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3, you get an "access denied error"
To solve this, do the following:
1. Download Subinacl.exe from here
2. Open up notepad and paste in the following
| Code: | cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose |
3. Save the file as reset.cmd and place it somewhere you can remember.
note: When saving the file, make sure it's saved as "reset.cmd" not "reset.txt.cmd" otherwise it will not work.
4. Install Subincal.exe
5. Open up command prompt and navigate to the directory where you
saved your "reset.cmd" file
6. In command prompt, type in reset.cmd and press enter to let it
do its job.
7. When done, try reinstalling SP3.
This was a known issue and it's addressed under Microsoft KB article 949377
