it's because your computer wasn't designed for xp, this happened on a computer i worked on once. all you have to do is slipstream the AHCI drivers, for your SATA hdd, onto a new xp cd which you'll make. there are lots of guides out there, but you first need the drivers off of your manufacturers website. if you can't get the drivers, you can't downgrade to xp because most of your hardware won't run.

To do that you need to create your own XP disc and then place the ACHI driver path into the automated answer file.
Another way is to change it in the bios from ACHI to standard SATA.
Dell bios lets you do it, but I don't know about the others.

If your laptop can run vista, why not just stay with it? It is a good/great operating system... Probably one of the best Windows versions.

not all BIOS let you do it though. i tried it on a shitty ACER laptop and it didn't have the options, so i just slipstreamed the drivers.

My moms Acer let me do it, but i have to do it manually everytime i start up, otherwise it wont work O.o, and it doesent save the settings, so i had to spend an hour looking for the Sata Driver...

Vista doesnt let you install XP over it.
You have to put in like.... an Ubuntu CD. COMPLETELY format your harddrive. Put in the XP CD, install.
