Well if you are new, and really have no idea what to do. I suggest buying a barebone kit. It ships you the important parts and gives you a guide on how to put it together. It can also build a pretty decent computer that you can use for school and games and stuff.

Building a computer is not terribly difficult...
I started out by only knowing a small sliver about hardware and came out building a computer ( a knowing much more )...
Building a computer is easy, picking the parts and choosing/learning is the part where you really learn and probably spend the most time.
My suggestion, build it.
Another suggestion is go to irc.freenode.net ( you can use mIRC or irssi or xchat ) and the ##hardware channel to ask all your question. It is great, effecient and usually fast.

Building a system can make you feel a sense of accomplishment and proud!
And it's not that difficult, it's more like building Legos, Erector, or Knex.

It's not that hard. Just hit the customize button on any custom pc website (such as alienware.com), and you can 'build' a computer on there. If I'm not mistaken, alienware.com won't let you combine incompatable parts. Then, you just have to buy the parts from newegg and put it together.

Picking out the parts is usually the "hard" part. Just ask whatever questions you need to and run your final build through some knowledgable people so they can make sure it'll all go together.
Once you've got all the parts, you've just got to put them together. It's almost like playing with legos.

When you buy the parts, there isn't an actual guide on how to assemble it. Rather they have manuals on where the parts go, so using a little bit of common sense and safety, it would take a few hours to build it up. It's really fun too and you know your machine inside and out with that.
But for barebone kits, look at this nice video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZchGhkZcC4

IMO that way you learn nothing. My way would be to actually LEARN about processors, which one would suit you etc... LEARN about graphics card, which one would be a waste of money, which one is compatible with your OS etc...

make sure u have warranty for all the parts before u start building them. and wash your hands before you start building them, cuz static electricity can easily fry an component such as transistors.

I seriously wonder how many people ground themselves.
I just move shit. I don't really pay attention. I havn't had any part malfunction on me yet.
