They all use the standard ATX mount points as far as I can see, so the same size as a normal board.

The board has 6 ram slots to support dual triple-channel DDR3, and Asus is planning on their X58 ROG boards to support both SLI and CrossFire.

id probably get the quad i7... oct i7 is srsly an overkill unless you do some heavy duty stuff.

There are always boards out that are overkill. Maximus 2 is overkill to me.

Maximus 2 is not overkill it just has a more elaborate heatsink. Strip that thing off and you can see it's just another regular motherboard.
If you want overkill then check this out ICHOT-SLI
